Chicago brings in visitors from near and far. Whether the iconic architecture or the sports and music scenes draw you, or you just want to taste its famous deep-dish pizza, you can’t go wrong visiting this great city. Chicago makes a worthy place for a standalone trip or a stop on a road trip through the area. But if you’re planning to drive to (or through) Chicago, you need to know where to park when it’s time to get out and see the sights. Here’s everything you need to know about Chicago parking.

Is There Free Parking in Chicago?

Can you find free parking when you’re ready to leave the car behind and get out to explore this special city? The availability of free Chicago parking depends on the time of day. You can park for free in most areas of Chicago between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Most parking is also free on Sundays. You won’t have to pay for parking on a Sunday if you park in a metered space outside the city’s central business district. There’s an exception, though. You’ll still need to pay if you’re parking in a space with a sign that says, “7 Day Paid Parking.” Pay stations in areas with free Sunday parking won’t accept payment on a Sunday. That’s good news for your weekend road trip.

Where Can I Park All Day in Chicago?

Of course, you also need to know how to deal with Chicago parking when it’s not a Sunday. You don’t want to worry about scurrying to feed a meter when enjoying the city or digging into a deep-dish pizza. You can use several strategies to park all day and make the most of your time in the city.

There’s a Chicago parking app that makes dealing with street parking easy. You can pay for parking with your smartphone if you have the ParkChicago app. Using the app means you don’t have to visit pay stations, put a receipt on your dashboard, or rush back to your car before your time expires. Instead, you can use the app to add more time, even from remote locations.

Here’s a tip for visitors: You’ll usually find cheaper parking, both street parking and in parking lots, the farther away you go from the Loop and the Near North neighborhood. If you’re willing to park farther away, take a cab or bus, or walk to your destination, you can save on parking rates. The West Loop and Greektown tend to offer cheaper parking.

You can also go for valet parking if you want some added convenience. Valet parking is sometimes less expensive than parking in a garage or using metered street parking. Valet parking in Chicago usually allows you to leave your car for three hours, and you can pay increased rates beyond that time. Confirm how long you have and calculate the cost, including tip, if you opt for valet parking.

Is It Hard To Find Parking in Chicago?

Chicago parking does have a bit of a reputation for being tough. Yes, you can find metered parking on most downtown streets, but it’s sometimes hard to find an open spot. If you use metered parking, remember that parking is for two-hour slots. Don’t let your time elapse because you’ll inevitably get a ticket. Remember, the Chicago parking app can help you add time even when you’re not at your car.

You also want to be careful about street parking bans in Chicago. The city strictly enforces parking zone bans during rush hour in downtown Chicago. Your car will get towed if you park in one of these zones, so carefully check all street signs before parking, and make sure to move your car before the no parking time starts.

Rush hour parking zone bans aren’t the only bans to watch out for when parking in Chicago. The city also enforces street cleaning bans, winter parking bans, and residential permit parking. You’ll also encounter parking restrictions at different times of the year, such as during baseball season in Wrigleyville and Bridgeport or in the South Loop when Soldier Field is hosting events.

Chicago parking apps can help streamline your parking search. In addition to using the ParkChicago app for street parking, you can use apps such as SpotHero and ParkWhiz to reserve discounted spots. You can even look for deals for parking garages. Put in the address or neighborhood you plan on exploring and see maps of discounted parking spots, then make your parking reservation online.

How Much Does It Cost To Park in Chicago?

Now, the question on everyone’s minds: Is Chicago parking expensive? Chicago uses metered parking predominantly in business areas. The city has a three-tier structure for setting the rates for meters. You’ll encounter the highest rates in the downtown Loop area. Here’s what to expect:

  • Downtown Loop parking: $7.00 per hour.
  • Central Business District parking: $4.75 per hour.
  • Other parts of the city: $2.50 per hour.

Roosevelt Avenue borders the Central Business District parking area to the south, North Avenue is the north boundary, and Halsted Street is the west perimeter. The areas with the lowest rates have approximately 81% of all parking spaces in the city.

Parking meters accept credit cards. You can also use the ParkChicago app to pay by phone and extend your time. Using the app to pay for the maximum allowed time doesn’t cost you. But if you don’t need your spot for the maximum time, you’ll need to pay an additional fee. It’s typically only $0.35.

Are You Ready To Visit Chicago?

Now that you know how to park in the city, you’re ready for your big trip. Visiting Pequod’s Pizza is a must on your trip to Chicago. Make sure to stop by and order our deep-dish pizza or make a reservation while you’re in town. It’ll be a highlight of your visit.

Pizza has the perfect food chemistry to win the hearts and taste buds of diners across America. The Washington Post reports that 40% of Americans eat pizza at least once a week. This flavorful favorite has the ideal blend of rich, complex, sweet, and savory to keep diners digging in. Though you hardly need an excuse to enjoy a delicious pie, National Pizza Day is a great reason to indulge. Keep reading as our Pequod’s Pizza team in Chicago shares everything you need to know to celebrate pizza.

What Is National Pizza Day?

Pequod's pan pizzaNational Pizza Day is a tasty holiday that seems to have originated around the year 2000, but it’s unclear where the holiday started. Regardless, it’s unlikely anyone will argue with a designated day for munching on one of America’s favorite foods. An early form of pizza originated in Naples, Italy, in the 10th century, where cooks would prepare flatbread topped with tomato sauce and a sprinkling of cheese. By the 18th century, pizza was a popular street food for working-class Italians.

Pizza came to America in the late 19th century along with Italian immigrants. In 1905, a New York City pizzeria began serving the dish, and pizza’s popularity took off. Today, Americans consume 3 billion pizzas every year, making it one of the most popular foods in the country. Divided among the population, this equates to 46 slices of pizza per person each year. Make sure you chow down on some of those slices in honor of National Pizza Day.

When Is National Pizza Day?

National Pizza Day takes place on Feb. 9 each year. The delicious date falls on a Friday in 2024. There’s no better time to sink your teeth into your favorite pizza pie than at the end of the week. In 2025, National Pizza Day will be on a Sunday, so you can celebrate with a tasty meal as you head into the new week.

How To Celebrate National Pizza Day

Happy National Pizza Day. If you’re excited to start celebrating, we have several ideas for making it memorable.

Visit Pequod’s Pizza

Pequod’s Pizza is famous for its distinctive pan-style pizza with a caramelized cheese crust. The restaurant’s original location is in Norton Grove, Illinois. Demand for this popular pie led to the opening of a second location in 1992 in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Don’t fret if you’re not in Chicago. You can also enjoy Pequod’s nationwide with shipping via Gold Belly. Build a two-pack, three-pack, or four-pack of pan-style deep dish pizzas from Pequod’s and enjoy this renowned pizza anywhere in America. Order early to ensure your pizzas arrive in time for National Pizza Day.

Try New Toppings

Expand your taste buds and try something new for National Pizza Day. The top five pizza toppings in America are pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, extra cheese, and bacon, in that order. The top 10 toppings include chicken, onion, red and green bell peppers, ham, and black olives. If you’re willing to explore beyond these staples, try some of the options in the top 20 toppings, which include meatballs, basil, pineapple, Canadian bacon, jalapenos, beef, tomatoes, banana peppers, fresh garlic, and salami.

If you’re ready for something original, consider testing a more distinctive combination. Some trending toppings around the country include pickles, hot honey, arugula, and specialty cheeses, such as buffalo mozzarella and burrata. A few pizzerias have experimented with seafood, artichokes, fried chicken, and caramelized onions. Chorizo is making an appearance, especially on Mexican-themed pizzas that feature other nacho toppings, such as spicy cheese, jalapenos, tomatoes, and avocado. Get in the kitchen and whip up something fun.

Play a Pizza-Themed Game

Get a digital pizza fix with a themed cooking game. Take some time on National Pizza Day to try out the popular Good Pizza, Great Pizza game. It’s available on the Apple App Store, Google Play, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Amazon. You’ll get to run a virtual pizza shop, cooking up pies all day long.

Host a Pizza Party

Get your friends in on the fun and host a pizza party for National Pizza Day. It’s a great way to celebrate your favorite food with your favorite people. Make sure to order various options so there’s something for everyone. Pequod’s has nearly a dozen toppings suitable for vegetarians, including spinach, tomato, onion, mushroom, green pepper, green olives, black olives, giardiniera, and more.

If you like it hot, try a pizza topped with jalapeno, pepperoni, and fresh garlic. Meat lovers will find no shortage of protein-packed picks, including sausage, ground beef, Italian beef, meatballs, and Canadian bacon. You can even customize your pie from Pequod’s with options such as light dough, a well-done crust, light sauce or cheese, and a custom cut.

Other Pizza-Related National Days

Pizza is too good to celebrate only once a year. That’s why there are numerous pizza holidays you can sink your teeth into. Additional pizza-related dates you might want to add to the calendar include the following:

  • National Deep Dish Pizza Day: April 5.
  • National Pizza Party Day: Third Friday in May.
  • Pizza Margherita Day: June 11.
  • National Cheese Pizza Day: Sept. 5.
  • National Pepperoni Pizza Day: Sept. 20.
  • National Sausage Pizza Day: Oct. 11.
  • World Pizza Makers Day: Oct. 25.
  • National Pizza With the Works Except Anchovies Day: Nov. 12.

If that’s not enough pizza parties for you, don’t forget October is also National Pizza Month. The national monthly celebration first took place in 1984 with the launch of Pizza Today magazine. In 1987, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as National Pizza Month.

When it’s a friend or family member, knowing that someone near and dear to you likes pizza can help you figure out what to give when you’re searching for the perfect Christmas gift. Explore the best Christmas gift ideas for pizza lovers and jumpstart your holiday shopping today.

Baking Stones

Also sometimes referred to as a pizza stone, a baking stone is a must-have kitchen item for any pizza lover. This stone is a porous ceramic rectangle or circle placed on the floor or lowest rack of a cold oven. The stone heats as the oven’s temperature increases. Baking pizza on a stone provides more reflective heat than the oven can generate by itself, creating an environment that closely matches that of a professional pizzeria oven.

When you use a baking stone for cooking a pizza, you’ll find that the pizza crust will come out nice and even, with just the right amount of crispiness. A baking stone is ideal for preparing pizza or baking crusty breads such as focaccia, hard rolls, and baguettes.

As you use it in the oven, a baking stone will brown naturally with age. Repeated use will only further harden the stone and improve its baking performance for pizzas and breads.

Cookbooks

Every pizza enthusiast should have a cookbook or two dedicated to making pizzas. You’ll find an infinite selection of pizza-themed cookbooks online or at your local bookstore that can take your gift recipients through the techniques of perfect pizza preparation at home. Whether you want to learn how to make Grandma Pizza or experiment with different combinations of toppings, a pizza-themed cookbook makes a thoughtful Christmas gift to inspire pizza creativity.

Frozen Pequod’s Deep-Dish Pizza From Goldbelly

Frozen sausage pizza from Pequod'sEven if you don’t call Chicago or Morton Grove home, you can still give the gift of Pequod’s Pizza to any pizza lover anywhere. We now ship our famous deep-dish pan pizza across the United States thanks to our partnership with Goldbelly.

Select from cheese, pepperoni, or sausage pan pizzas direct from our ovens to your gift recipients. We prepare the pizzas in-house, freeze them, pack them, and ship them directly to your door. With each bite, your favorite pizza lover will enjoy our signature Pequod’s caramelized bottom crust and generous toppings.

Gift Certificate or Gift Card for a Pizza-Themed Cooking Class

Would a friend or family member love to learn how to make the perfect pizza from a professional? Every metropolitan region across the country has at least one culinary school that connects food professionals with home cooks who want to master essential kitchen techniques. Look for pizza-themed cooking classes in your area and purchase a gift certificate or gift card. These gifts of experience have become popular holiday presents over the years, and they’re a perfect way to give those who love to cook a special treat for the holidays and for years to come.

Homemade Pizza Dough

Home cooks who love preparing pizzas will appreciate a gift of homemade pizza dough. Once you’ve prepared a batch of dough, divide it into single-pizza portions. Then, freeze each piece in a resealable plastic storage bag. To defrost, thaw the dough in the refrigerator for a day. Be sure to include your gift recipient’s favorite pizza toppings, a jar of homemade or commercially prepared tomato sauce, and some fresh cheeses to put over the top of your fresh pizza dough gift.

Kitchen Apron

When preparing a pizza masterpiece in your kitchen, you’re bound to fling around a little flour. A kitchen apron is essential for keeping your clothes free of cooking debris. Various styles of aprons are available from home goods stores and other kitchen-supply retailers. Tuck a few kitchen utensils, such as wooden spoons and metal dry measuring cups, into the pockets for extra thoughtfulness.

Pizza Cutter

The only proper way to cut a pizza is with a pizza cutter. When selecting a pizza cutter design for a Christmas gift, choose one with a wide blade capable of cutting through various crust thicknesses, including deep-dish pizza crust. Pizza cutters with ergonomic handles offer a comfortable grip so that you can get precise cuts every time.

Pizza Peel

Every serious pizza connoisseur needs a pizza peel in the kitchen. This flat board with a handle lets you transfer your pizza to a baking stone (see above) in the oven and transfer your cooked pizza to a serving platter. You can find pizza peels with different lengths of handles, but make sure you buy a high-quality seasoned wood model so it can last for years of pizza baking.

Pizza Tree Ornaments

Decorate your Christmas tree with pizza ornaments, from slices to toppings. Many Christmas ornament retailers online offer whimsical designs for pizza-themed ornaments that any family or friend who loves pizza would appreciate receiving. Start a tradition by giving that special pizza enthusiast a unique ornament each year.

Specialty Oils and Vinegars

As any pizza fan can attest, a drizzling of the best extra-virgin olive oil or the richest balsamic vinegar can amp up the flavor profile of any pizza. You’ll find a plethora of specialty oils and vinegars from local and online retailers that make thoughtful Christmas gift ideas, especially when you combine them with some of the items mentioned above.

Give the Gift of Pizza This Holiday Season

As you’ve discovered, you can find many ideal gift options for pizza enthusiasts of every persuasion. No matter who they are or what their favorite pizza toppings may be, a pizza-themed gift will bring holiday cheer to their faces and a feeling of satisfaction in their bellies. And for those Chicago residents or Chicagoans at heart, you can order a frozen Pequod’s deep-dish pizza or a fun piece of Pequod’s swag for a thoughtful Christmas gift. All of us at Pequod’s Pizza wish you and all the pizza lovers in your life a holiday season of good eating.

The affordability of Pequod’s Pizza compared to Lou Malnati’s can vary depending on the specific menu items, sizes, toppings, and any ongoing promotions. Lou Malnati’s is often considered to be more affordable than Pequod’s Pizza, offering a cheaper pizza option for young families.

Pequod’s Pizza, known for its unique caramelized crust and generous cheese layers, can sometimes come at a slightly higher price point due to the distinctive nature of its pizzas. The team ensures each pizza is made to perfection. That said, the good things in life are worth paying for. So, if you’re looking to experience the heart of Chicago’s pizza scene properly and you’re happy to pay a little more for it, then Pequod’s Pizza with its world-class crust and toppings is well worth the couple of extra bucks.

Signature Recipes and Available Toppings

Lou Malnati’s focuses on a traditional deep-dish crust. The team makes their pizzas by pressing dough into a deep-dish pan to create a sweet, buttery, and flaky crust. Toppings such as sausage, green peppers, and pepperoni add more flavor to the simple dishes. On the other side of the pizza spectrum is Pequod’s Pizza, boasting a unique and unforgettable twist on deep-dish: its signature caramelized crust.

This culinary innovation has not only set it apart but also turned its pizzas into a sought-after delicacy with a loyal following, combining a crispy, cheesy outer layer with a saucy, savory center. To create the fabled dish, the pizza dough is pressed into a seasoned deep-dish pan, creating a unique crisp and caramelized crust by placing the cheese directly on the dough and cooking it along the edges of the pan.

The base can be tailored to cater to a variety of allergies, and the plethora of traditional and specialty toppings, such as spinach, ground beef, meatballs, mushrooms, jalapenos, and green peppers, satisfies all palettes and tastes.

Ambience and Dining Experience

Pequod’s various dining locations boast a warm and laid-back atmosphere, making it a favorite spot for an intimate meal out with friends or family. Both restaurants cater to a specific niche within their pizza sub-types. Lou’s is popular with the old-school crowd, while a more adventurous crowd seeks out Pequod’s.

Lou Malnati’s restaurants may be slightly more upscale at face value, but the warm, cozy, and relaxed atmosphere of Pequod’s Pizza leans toward an authentic Italian dining experience that focuses on the food first. The restaurant’s popularity is further emphasized by the snaking queues of people that line the doors at weekends, so don’t forget to make a reservation well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Dishes That Aren’t Deep-Dish Pizza

While pizza enthusiasts celebrate both restaurants for their deep-dish delicacies, their menus extend beyond these iconic dishes. Both restaurants also offer a thin crust pizza option that provides a lighter alternative while still boasting the unique flavors and toppings each pizzeria is known for. If you’re looking for something simple and light, the menu at Lou Malnati’s includes comforting soups such as the minestrone soup that’s a firm favorite.

If you’re looking for a real home-cooked and hearty Italian dining experience, Pequod’s Pizza is your best bet. It offers a variety of appetizers, sides, and mains, including garlic bread, mozzarella sticks, buffalo wings, salads, and sandwiches, to keep you coming back for more. The ravioli and mostaccioli pastas are available in half and full portions to suit your appetite — they’re so good that whatever size you choose, they promise to keep you coming back for more.

Which Is the Best Deep-Dish Pizza in Chicago?

In the grand showdown of Chicago’s deep-dish pizzas, Pequod’s Pizza emerges as the victor, capturing the hearts and palates of Chicagoans. From the first bite into its legendary caramelized crust to the last morsel of gooey cheese, Pequod’s Pizza exemplifies Chicago-style dining with a cult following that truly speaks for itself.

Pequod’s innovative approach makes it the go-to destination for those seeking authentic and mouthwatering deep-dish pizza. Whether you choose to dine in, savor its flavors through take-out or delivery, or indulge in its frozen pizzas via Goldbelly, Pequod’s promises a journey into the heart of Chicago’s rich culinary heritage.

If you love homemade mozzarella sticks, you don’t have to wait to go out to enjoy this delicious cheesy appetizer. With this recipe, you can make them whenever the desire hits you. Just be sure you plan for the 45-minute freeze time (more on that later).

What Are Mozzarella Sticks Made Of?

It’s best to use high-quality ingredients when making your mozzarella sticks. But don’t worry. You likely have most, if not all, of the ingredients on hand. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella cheese is the centerpiece of this tempting appetizer. You can buy a block of whole-fat mozzarella cheese, or you can use individually wrapped string cheese. Just make sure the cheese is low-moisture and whole milk, making it tastier and giving it a better texture.
  • Panko: This ingredient will give your mozzarella sticks their crunchiness. Panko is slightly different than regular breadcrumbs. The texture is not as fine as regular breadcrumbs, but you can use a rolling pin to make them smoother, so they’ll stick to the cheese better. You’ll also add seasonings to the panko to perk up the taste.
  • Italian seasoning: This seasoning is a combination of herbs such as basil, oregano, marjoram, and more. You’ll use just enough Italian seasoning to enhance the flavor but not overpower it. Since panko doesn’t have much flavor on its own, you’ll appreciate the burst of zest this gives your mozzarella sticks.
  • Salt: An essential part of any fried or coated food is salt. There’s no salt in Italian seasoning or panko, so you’ll need to add a few sprinkles to draw out the taste.
  • Flour: You can purchase regular all-purpose flour. It will work fine as a dusting that helps the eggs stick to the cheese.
  • Eggs: Most deep-fried food gets dipped in eggs before being coated with the breading. It works to keep the panko clinging to the mozzarella sticks.
  • Oil: You can use any of the regular cooking oils, such as corn, vegetable, peanut, or canola oil. You just don’t want to use olive oil because of its strong taste.
  • Garlic and pepper (optional): You may prefer a little extra zing on your crunchy exterior. If so, you can add a couple of dashes of garlic and pepper for taste.

What Is the Process for Making Mozzarella Sticks?

Making these homemade mozzarella sticks isn’t too difficult. And it can be quite fun, too. As soon as you have your ingredients purchased and ready, just follow these steps:

  1. Arrange three bowls on the counter for your dredging components.
  2. You’ll have the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic in one bowl. The second bowl is for whisked eggs. And the third bowl will contain the panko and Italian seasoning.
  3. Now, it’s time to cut your mozzarella block into strips. These can be three-quarter inches thick. The length can be about 3 inches, or you can make mini mozzarella sticks 1.5 inches long. If you’re using string cheese, you won’t need to cut them at all.
  4. You’ll coat the mozzarella sticks with a dusting of the flour mixture. Then dip in the egg and coat them with the panko crumbs. You can expect your fingers to get messy, and you may need to wash them halfway through if too many panko crumbs are sticking to them.
  5. After you coat the mozzarella sticks, lay them on a baking sheet or other large, flat surface. You’ll need to refrigerate them for 45 minutes before the next step.
  6. After retrieving the mozzarella sticks from the refrigerator, it’s time to heat the oil. Cover your pan in oil and let it heat up to 350 degrees.
  7. Place the mozzarella sticks in the oil a few at a time. You don’t want your oil to cool down too much, and your mozzarella sticks need room to move.
  8. Fry the mozzarella sticks for about a minute on each side, then place them on a plate covered with a paper towel.
  9. Serve fresh with your favorite dipping sauce.

Recipe for Homemade Mozzarella Sticks

Now for the nitty-gritty details of exactly how to make your homemade mozzarella sticks.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour.
  • Two eggs.
  • 2 cups of panko.
  • 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning.
  • 12 oz. of low-moisture mozzarella cheese cut into pieces 3-inch by three-quarter inches (or 12 oz. string cheese cut in half).
  • 2 teaspoons of salt (optional).
  • Half a teaspoon of black pepper (optional).
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder (optional).
  • 1 quart of vegetable oil.

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Set aside a lined baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
  2. Place panko in a large, sealed baggie. Use a rolling pin over the sealed bag of panko until the crumbs are smooth.
  3. Mix flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a small bowl.
  4. In a second bowl, add eggs and 1 tablespoon of water. Whisk until everything is smooth.
  5. In a third bowl, mix the Italian seasoning with the panko crumbs.
  6. Dip one piece of cheese into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, followed by the panko. Be sure to press into the panko mix carefully so the crumbs stick evenly.
  7. Set the cheese sticks on the lined baking sheet one at a time.
  8. Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer and freeze the cheese sticks for 45 minutes.
  9. Pour oil into a large pot and turn on medium-high heat. Using a deep fat thermometer, bring the oil to 350°F.
  10. Gently place the cheese sticks from the freezer into the oil in small batches. Cook until golden brown, about one minute for each side.
  11. Remove from oil and place on a cooling rack. Repeat with the rest of the cheese sticks.
  12. Serve the mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce. The recommended serving size is four pieces.

Whether you’re looking for a delicious pizza at a restaurant such as Pequod’s Pizza, or you’d like to make your own pie at home, you expect the crust to be delicious. If you’re making your own pizza, the foundation of your dish is a great crust. To make a great crust, you must first know how to make excellent pizza dough. A common problem many people experience when they make their own pizza is that the dough doesn’t rise.

If your pizza dough isn’t rising, these tips will help you understand why. We also share some advice for improving your dough so you end up with a tasty crust.

Your Dough Doesn’t Have Enough Yeast

There are several reasons why the yeast in your dough may not ferment adequately. Perhaps you didn’t add enough yeast to the dough and should increase the amount you use in your next batch. This process makes more sense when you understand yeast’s role in developing your dough. Yeast eats sugars from flour, converting it to carbon dioxide. This process increases the volume of the dough, but you need adequate yeast for it to work.

Generally, you might expect homemade pizza dough to rise quickly — within two hours — so you’ll need to add more yeast than you would with some other bread recipes. Keep in mind that the temperature of your kitchen can also impact how much yeast you need. If your home is relatively cold, you’ll want to use more yeast for the dough to rise quickly. In a warmer kitchen, you don’t need as much yeast.

The Dough Is Too Cold or Too Hot

If your dough is cold right after you mix it, fermentation isn’t going to happen easily. You might need to start your dough with warm liquid, and you should ensure that you don’t store the dough at too cold a temperature. If you add cold water to the yeast, you should see some action eventually, but the process may be slow.

If you’ve already added cold water to the mix and want to speed things up a bit, you may have success with the help of your oven. Keep the dough wrapped and place it on the middle rack of your oven. Boil a cup of water and place it on the rack underneath the dough. Close the oven door and let the heat warm up your dough. Remember: you don’t need to turn on your oven for this to work.

Of course, pizza dough can also become too hot, which prevents the dough from rising correctly as well. Hot water can kill the yeast quickly, so avoid too much heat early in the process. In most cases, room-temperature dough is perfect. Lukewarm water from your faucet is generally fine and won’t kill the yeast.

The Yeast Is Too Old

Old or dead yeast can cause problems for your pizza dough as well. Old yeast is no longer active, so it won’t feed on the flour to create that fluffy dough you want. The shelf life of yeast varies based on its type. For example, fresh yeast is good for a matter of weeks, whereas dry yeast can last much longer.

Before using the yeast, check that it’s still good. You can do this by filling a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of yeast. After about 10 minutes, the yeast should start to foam if it’s still good to use.

The Dough Isn’t Mixed Well

If your dough isn’t rising, but you’re certain you used the correct ingredients, you may not have kneaded the dough enough. Each ingredient in your dough is crucial. The yeast feeds on the flour to rise, and the water allows the yeast to move faster. Salt can slow down the yeast’s movement, so having a higher concentration of salt in some areas will cause the dough to rise more slowly.

To improve gluten development, you may need to spend some more time kneading the dough so that the gas built by the yeast feeding on sugar won’t escape. Kneading dough is no simple process, and you may find that you must knead it for 15 minutes or longer.

Too Much Salt

If you’ve tried to knead your dough for longer, you may have added too much salt to the mix. Adding too much salt can kill the yeast in your dough, which means you won’t see any action, even if you follow all the other suggestions listed here. While salt is an important ingredient, less may be more in this case.

The Dough Needs To Sit Longer

In some cases, the dough just hasn’t had enough time to rest. While it may be hard to wait for your dough to rise, remember that a slow-rising dough is going to have excellent flavor and consistency. If you’re making a fast-rising dough, you likely need to let the dough sit for a couple of hours.

The Water Is Bad

If you don’t have good tap water in your area, you may find that it impacts your yeast. Your dough may not rise because your water is too hard or has added chemicals that impact fermentation. If you think your water is impacting the quality of your dough, try using bottled water instead. Just make sure that it’s not too cold if it’s straight from the refrigerator.

Pizza Dough Isn’t Always Simple

Although making dough for pizza requires just a few simple ingredients, the process is heavily affected by the elements: temperature, humidity, water and yeast quality, and more. It’s easy to be disappointed when you’ve put a significant amount of work into your pizza dough, only to find that it won’t rise several hours later. If you’ve tried everything and it looks like pizza isn’t on the menu at home, you can order from Pequod’s Pizza to get your fix of mouthwatering dough, cheese, veggies, meat, and more in Chicago tonight.
